See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html for more explanation of the difference between the two movements.
The basic philosophy behind open source is very simple: When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, and people fix the bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.
There are many active Open Source Software projects but some may be thinking you get what you pay for, so if it's free there must be something wrong with it. Sometimes this is true but there are open source software projects providing stable, scalable applications. The key is to know where to look and what to look for when evaluating the stability and scalability.
Here are a few interesting facts and examples of Open Source projects:
Apache is the number one web server at nearly 62% of all installations. Second place was help by Microsoft at just under 27%. (Source: Netcraft)
GNU/Linux is the number two operating system at nearly 30% of all servers behind Microsoft operating system at nearly 50%. (Source: Netcraft)
Sendmail (a mail transport agent) sendmail has become one of the standards of the Internet's infrastructure (TCP/IP, Apache, sendmail).
BIND the Berkley Internet Naming Daemon responsible for mapping domain names to IP addresses ran on 95% of all public reverse DNS servers. (Source: Information Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California).
MySQL founded in 1995 by two open source veterans, Michael "Monty" Widenius and David Axmark, with the help of Allan Larsson and claims 4 million installations worldwide and 30,000 downloads of the software per day making MySQL by far the planet's most widely distributed open-source database. (Source: mySQL)
PHP is a widely used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML and as of May 2003 it was being used on 12,487,030 domains and 1,321,203 IP addresses. (Source: PHP)
Linux Operating System is over three years old and has grabbed 13.7 percent of the $50.9 billion market for server computers, and that figure is expected to jump to 25.2 percent in 2006, putting Linux in the No. 2 position. (Source: IDC)
SourceForge a site providing support tools and resources for the OSS/Free Software movement recently announced a major two year

New teamlist member: Ammodump
Ammodump was asked to join the team. As quoted from his introduction in the team: "I enjoy being a community member, and that often my comments hold weight. Sometimes my comments and advice are misguided, but sometimes it is hard to understand others questions ;-) ". With two main hobbies (PN and beer), Ammodump seems to be born for the support team here at the community website.
Remote code injection problem
As some people already know, there is a remote code injection problem with the language parameter as mentioned in the Feedback Forum. Both the .7 and the .8 versions have been updated to fix this security vulnerability, so everybody is urged to upgrade their PostNuke version to the latest release (see also Release Announcement). Some background information: The FormUtil::getPassedValue() function also accepts an input vector GETPOST now. It allows to ensure that the contents of _COOKIE are not taken into account when you get data (as it would be when you go through _REQUEST). The input domain is limited to _GET and _POST and not through _REQUEST / _COOKIE anymore. This is applied firstly to the newlang and thistheme parameters, and has been (and will be) applied to the rest of the core functions additionally.
Session handling
Some features have been added to the session handling in the core system:
Session id regeneration (random and on login/logout), making it even more difficult to hijack a session. This has been achieved without any extra writes to the database, so the feature has no overheads.
The ability to rename the session variable (always was POSTNUKESID), and changing from session file storage to session db storage has been enhanced.
Auth-id check to the user login screen (and block) - this has introduced a login bug which has been entered into the bug tracker and will be fixed by the release of MS3.
The session regeneration options are available in the (upgraded) Settings module.
Also fixed for both the 0.764 release as well as the 0.8 release are some PHP >= 5.2.0 issues due to session handling (See the forums, credits to fredatwork). It seems to solve the problems with PostNuke installations running on 5.2.0 or higher.
Minimum MySQL and PHP versions
The minimum version for MySQL has been raised to 4.1.x, due to some installer problems that are related to old 3.x databases. See also MySQL's lifetime philosophy at Planet MySQL. Due to security reasons, the recommended minimum php-version is at least 4.3.10.
Installer
Now fixed are some install problems with register_globals ON. In addition, there has been added a check for register_globals at the .76x install process for information only. The installation of PostNuke on these environments is nevertheless still possible. Sync with the .8 installer is to be done.
System and core modules
The internal variables statusmsg and errormsg are now arrays: it is now possible to capture (and display) multiple errors. Therefore, pnGetStatusMsg() is renamed to pnGetStatusMsgs() and LogUtil::getStatusMessagesText().
Float handling returns from Ajax has been discussed within the team. It appears that floats in the Non-US locales did not correctly set the decimal delimiters. Therefore, the locale has been set to en_US to ensure this. A solution for writing floats to the DB is still pending.
Robert has added the encryption / decryption methods, using the mcrypt library function, for use in the API.
In the Theme module, the plugins for showing the sitename, slogan and complete title have been altered to use multilanguage support.
The Settings module has some nice dynamic interface elements added to the Security and General function types, increasing useability in this one.
The magic_quotes_gpc recommendation for .8 has been changed. It should be off in stead of on. According to php security group, this feature is inconsistent in blocking attacks, and can in some cases cause data loss with uploaded files. Besides the revert of magic_quotes_gpc recommendation, the SysInfo module now also checks for allow_url_include (new in PHP 5.2) and the suhosin patch/extension.
Finally, all variables retrieved through FormUtil::getPassedValue() are now cached
ValueAddons modules
The Pages module now displays the category that each page belongs to in the overview.
The Error module (or Error handler, where error pages within PostNuke are handled) has been undergoing some changes. System errors, forbidden / not-found errors and specific API errors have their own templates and level of error reporting. A no-auth error will result in a more suitable 403 response rather than a 200-response with a status message. As a result, a lot of code has been altered to correctly use the new Log- and Error message handling.
The Wiki module has been renamed to more suitable 'Wiki_Code', as this module is a transform hook to enable Wiki formatting in content items.
The ExampleObj module has been reviewed, revised and updated by Robert. It should serve as a good example for any module writers

GPL, Copyright, and who owns what?

business. This in turn allows us to make enough money to be able to still contribute free themes and modules to the Postnuke community.
Ok on to the GPL....There is no violation of the GPL in this release, period. The link & copyright is not for the code, I didn’t code Postnuke or AutoTheme and would never claim to. You are free to do anything and everything with the code. Print it out; use it to make a paper airplane air force. Anything your heart desires. But, the design/layout/graphics are the reason to the copyright. I own every single right to the graphics and that’s why the link/copyright is required. Now here are some points to think about:
1. With AutoTheme the program is designed to abstract programming from design. So if the design is separate from the programming, wouldn’t that allow you to have intellectual ownership over the design. I use PHP (or I bug Karateka until he writes it for me), does that mean anything I create that uses PHP is bound to there terms?
2. I can create theme.html totally by myself…. Meaning AutoTheme is not involved in this process. You only use html comments to insert Postnuke/A.T data. So couldn’t I even say that the layout “html†and graphics are under my rights?
Now as you can tell I am in no way an expert in copyrights, but I do believe my point is valid. I would really like to hear some input from both the creators of AutoTheme and Harry Zink ( The Nukenator ). I in no way want to violate any sort of legal agreement I am bound to when using both Postnuke and AutoTheme. Also anyone else that has any sort of legal background please comment. I would still really like to release this theme

then i realized what had been told to me before all of this happend.. before the journal came to be... before i dedicated myself to this work.. but only recently has the message become clear.. and it is so papostours.. and i've never even used that word in my writing before.. it is so large.. that it can contain an entire movie.. well it came through a dream to me.. but in sync with the joe satriani new strange beautiful music cd... i tell you there words embedded in those songs... something very odd is going on... well so then as it was quite like a mission impossible senerio.. but undisclosed till now the full context of the notion... but what when we fast... why is this guy going so intirely mad... like noah building the ark... what work is he doing.. taking strange drugs and reporting back his results.. but then control on the fringe.. when i did not have any idea who i was working for.. but that it had something to do with the security of our collective human family.. i've top clerance.. only i'm a chatter box.. i'm a spin artist.. well everything that needs to say.. i say the best way forward.. on every variable of communication i've hit.. even those embarassing things to say.. still the duty to bring them out of the nonverbal unspoken.. proving mature composure in taboo contextual settings.. like not commenting or laughing when someone farts... that was my idea.. just treat it like a natural fuction that it is.. and respect the smell.. go on with the moment like it really wasn't to big of deal... if know one is around waif.. the culturally comfirmed in proper behavior by adam corrolla.. who surely broadens the horizon of politically correct in his own terms.. specifically though i was told directly by central intelligence by media spy wave broadcast that this work needed to be done.. that certain biochemicals had been released into the public domain... that every possible solution was being sought to overcome and survive this attack... that ever dietary tactic that i could foster toward strenghtening the immune system of our species was absolutly nesseccary... what happens when one fast is in pharmonic fequency tonation.. that has a direct effect on every organism on the entire planet... patterning deep at the atomic level.. the immune system of the planet... faced with every weakness culturally and socially presented... opening up to the healing potential of the body is an act of self defense... at the end of this dream... really needed contact... i could find nobody anyplace who was in a position to accomidate me... i was in a fast food resturant... this girl sitting behind me so beautiful in her smile as i asked her if she would give me a kiss and all my obsessive need and hunger for love vanished as i looked into her smiling face... she responded with a very inceptious smooch.. a huge man athletically built with big rings sat down at the table next to her and handed over her food... i was intimidated and said... looking to him in the eyes... o' i'm really meaning no offense... no harm.. i so much needed comfort... he smiled.. and said.. you don't want to get queer about it do you? .... and playfully in a sarcastic way punching me lightly on the arm.... laughed.. slightly backed away in my seat as i was in a booth turned towards there backs leaning over.. then he introduced me... this is my sister.. do you like her? i said she is very lovely... you should get to know her... he said biting into his food... i noticed her pure beauty even more so and as i looked at her became aware a sacrade anceint people.. presence was a blessing... my body began to shake... i looked back over to the man who was her brother.... looking into the gold on fingers that were not there but in my mind... suddenly i felt this was all orchestrated by god.. my attention was becoming cerebral as i thought about this woman who was nothing but love.. the voice in my head reminding me.. a view of all histiory swept my vision... i felt her hand was more than in mine.. i heard a man speaking in a very plain monotone way.. serious like a scientist but a millitary fact based briefing type..... a biological weapon has been released into the human stream... its purpouse is to destroy us... if we do not change in responce.. in a time spoken to the millionth of a second i was told... the moment it would be to late... the thing is i don't know when i was told only now understanding congnitively.... but that when i woke up near tears.. that the last song you saved my life on this cd had ended.. the voice faded through the last note... it felt good... really good to feel that in some way my life could has such purpose

and because there is no major portal running as an open source project and no major site like this is running on PostNuke...yet".
Besides that, the only good way to produce a good publishing system is to make it while it is actually being used. Therefore, the goal here is to set up a groundwork to take PostNuke a step further and to serve the people of the planet with IT-news they can use.
However, to make SlashPoint.com work we need some skilled people to participate in the making. The project will be run very much as PostNuke is run with different positions and functions.
The hosting is in place and now all we need is a few good men and women:
- A killer theme needs to be created as well as site graphics (designers)
- Writers and editors (a lot)
- Programmers (already here but need someone that wants to focus on this project for tweaking and knowledge sharing with the rest of PostNuke community)
- An overall Site admin/webmaster
- And more that I cannot think of right now. (perhaps that million dollar man with the need to donate his money to this open source community project.)
Anyways, if you are interested in this project or have any questions then let me know! You can reach me at lars (at) slashpoint.com.

Idea: backend.php - syndicate a full Topic!
(News)

(http://www.MYsite.com/search.php?query=&topic=1) and about sites that stop/go bankrupt (http://www.MYsite.com/search.php?query=&topic=2).
You have a website about trains (http://www.YOURsite.com/search.php?query=&topic=1) and about planes & automobiles (http://www.YOURsite.com/search.php?query=&topic=2).
I can create a Topic trains on my site and I'll display the news that I call from your website (the full article and people don't have to leave my site). You'll be able to create a topic called New Websites and syndicate my news. We both help each other with content, we keep our visitors, we both have a richer site and less work. It's a win-win situation and everybody's happy. Isn't life swell?
Of course, webmasters would have to be able to grant permission to syndicate their news -or- a source has to be mentioned at all times.
Just my 2 cents... I'm not a programmer so I don't know how and if this is possible, I'm just The Man With The Plan. Muhahaha
